evgeny shcheglov

Muralist, painter, graphic artist, author of multimedia projects.

Winner of the Moscow Prize for Literature and Art 2020.

Born in 1970 in Moscow.

He received a classical art education, graduating from the Moscow Academic Art Lyceum of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after Surikov. V.I. Surikov specialty painter-muralis. During the years of his studies he was accepted as a member of the Moscow Union of Artists as an active participant in Russian and foreign exhibitions.

Creative activity of the artist consists of several directions – the artist works in the field of conceptual realism, is engaged in abstract painting and surrealistic graphics. A large place in the activity is taken murals.

Works in the style of conceptual realism are the triptych “Hamburger Eaters”, which are portraits on canvases of modern consumers of fast food. It is also a series of graphic sheets and canvases on the theme of female nudity. These works are fragmentary compositions, the idea of which is that the author creates in two-dimensional space an analogy to the fragments of ancient sculptures that have reached our days with all sorts of losses. In the same series of works there are genre scenes with sitters engaged in everyday life.

The objectless painting is a synthesis of abstract expressionism with elements of constructivism and cubism, and is executed in mixed technique (alkyd enamel, oil, pastel, charcoal) on canvas and paper.

The project entitled “Fragments of Abstract Sculptures” is a surrealist graphic work. Its concept is that the viewer sees elements of sculptures not yet existing, invented by the author himself, in which one can see veiled hints of anthropomorphic or biomorphic forms.

In the field of murals, the artist works in the technique of classical painting, follows the principles of harmonious and stylistic connection of painting and architecture. He creates realistic compositions to expand the space, paintings imitating architecture, abstract compositions, all kinds of ornaments to decorate interiors and facades.

Evgeny Shcheglov is the author of numerous murals and panels in Russia and France, the author of several panels in Moscow Gostiny Dvor, on the Garden Ring in Moscow, co-author of the plafond of the CSKA metro station and panels in the lobby of the Shelepikha metro station.

CSKA and Shelepikha metro stations were awarded the “Golden Badge” of the international architectural festival Zodchestvo’18 as objects of social and cultural significance.

Turning to both expressionism and abstraction, each series of works by Evgeny Shcheglov is a creative impulse, thought-out from the sketch to its embodiment in the material.

Monumentalist and painter Evgeny Shcheglov is known for his work in the Moscow subway, as well as an artist whose canvases are overflowing with three-dimensional spaces and fictional abstract objects-sculptures.

Yevgeny was born in a creative family, and for him art is rather a search and exploration of both directions and himself in the context of the world history of art. Monumental solutions even in small abstract sheets or art objects on canvases give a full sense of the artist’s co-scaling in post-Soviet contemporary art, where the idea and synthesis of art create a completely new world of the artist.

Hamburger Eaters – Happiness is eating!/happiness exists!

Triptych “Hamburger Eaters – Happiness is eating!/happiness exists!” – is a project dedicated to the theme of food consumption. Food is a particle of the cosmos that gets inside a person. From the artist’s point of view, it is very curious to observe this, in general, somewhere mystical action, despite its seeming ordinariness at first glance.
Food for modern man is not only a means of satiation – it compensates for inner restlessness, concern, anxiety and other similar feelings of a psychological nature.
When eating, a person belongs to himself, his energy is focused on the taste of what he eats, on the enjoyment of the process. And indeed – he is happy at this moment – and it is very interesting for an artist to observe happiness and try to convey it to other people.
It is the Hamburger that can be seen simply as an abstract food – an energy food that can be eaten in the shortest possible time – and therefore one does not care how one does it.
The fashion for Hamburger is spread all over the world, it is cooked everywhere, only the filling may vary depending on geographical factors and culinary preferences – it can even be called a symbol of world globalization.
